Awards & Recognition

Many students thrive when given an opportunity to lead and represent their school community. It fosters a sense of pride and responsibility which often promotes strong personal growth and inspires others to step up. There are multiple ways in which we encourage students to embrace leadership at Upwey High School and to contribute meaningfully to the school community. Students identified as excelling in service and studies are recognised for their efforts and we have a long-established awards program that sees students honoured for their achievements.

Student Leadership

There are many opportunities throughout the high school experience for students to engage in formal leadership roles. We actively encourage students to consider these positions as a chance to realise their potential and develop skills that will assist them in their future professions.

Homegroup Captains | elected by their classmates to represent their homegroup (Years 7-9)

House Captains | Each of our four houses –Bleazby, Crow, Chandler and Knox- have a representative from each year level. These are chosen after an application and interview process
(Years 7-12)

School Captains | Four candidates are chosen after an application and interview process (Year 12). Each captain also becomes a student leader for one of our four school Houses.

The Student Council | A forum for students to participate in policy and decision-making for the school. Students can apply to become a member.

Year 9  Leadership Training | All students participate in a preliminary leadership training program that prepares them to become Peer Support Leaders in Year 10.

Peer Support | Year 10 students are assigned a Year 7 student ‘buddy’. They also
lead small groups of Year 7s through structured transition activities during Semester 1.

Leadership Development | Other leadership skill courses operate at various year levels throughout the year.

Awards and Achievements

Each year the school hosts an Awards evening where nominated students are awarded- before fellow students, families and staff- for their commitment and contribution to their studies, community, or co-curricular activities. It’s an opportunity for students to fully embody the school values of aspiration, respect and kindness, and to mark the achievements of those going beyond in their high school journey.

As part of the ceremony, the following accolades are awarded:

  • Yvonne Davis Sporting Excellence Award
  • Dux (each year level)
  • Honour Board Student (year 12)
  • Murray McAlister Best All-Rounder (year 12)
