Overview

At Upwey High School, the wellbeing and learning needs of students are pivotal and so we operate predominantly as two sub-schools: Middle Years (Year levels 7-9) and Later Years (Year levels 10-12)

The Middle Years program follows a ‘significant teacher’ model whereby students are led by the same two teachers for the majority of their class time- with the exception of specialist subjects. This model allows staff and students to build strong relationships and for each student to have a teaching team that is an expert in their personal learning and wellbeing. We believe that as developing young adults this consistency is fundamental to learning success and allows each student to build on a sense of belonging and place.

Differentiating the Later Years students allows us to support the specific needs of our older students progressing toward higher education or chosen employment pathways. We offer a diverse range of VCE subjects to Years 10-12, including a Vocational Major program (School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships Scheme) and access to a large range of Vocational (VET) subjects. These classes support students’ smooth transition into further education and help maximise employment opportunities.

Curriculum

At Upwey High School we recognise that students have varying needs and abilities and for this reason, we use a differentiated approach in our teaching. A comprehensive curriculum with a broad-based educational core is delivered to Years 7-9 and the large range of pathway possibilities in Years 10-12 caters effectively to our students and their individual learning journeys.

Middle Years

Years 7 and 8

Focus on Foundational Learning

Literacy and numeracy intervention programs sit alongside core curriculum to provide support where required. Students study English, Maths, Humanities,  French and Japanese in Year 7 and then students choose which language to continue with in Year 8 and beyond, sport, technologies, and the arts.

Year 9

Focus on Challenge

Students complete integrated units, allowing in-depth study of ‘big question’ issues. There are also many opportunities for the development of skills in leadership, decision making and initiative.

Later Years

Year 10

Focus on Exploring Pathways

Students explore their passions and strengths, electing seven semester-based units alongside core subjects. Students also have the choice of selecting an enhancement subject from a range of VCE Unit 1 & 2 subjects and VET subjects.

Years 11 and 12

Focus on Future Directions

Students have the choice of almost 40 VCE subjects and 50 VET (Vocational Education Training) subjects offered through the Mullum Cluster. VCE Educational Pathways are provided in both traditional academic areas and in vocational education, ensuring the needs of all students attending this school are met. Students also have the opportunity to complete a TAFE certificate during their VCE. School-based apprenticeship and traineeship programs are also available.
