The Upwey Higher Elementary School was the first post-primary educational institute in the shire of Ferntree Gully. It first opened in February, 1937 with 108 students enroled and was located in temporary accommodation whilst the building project was finalised. The school eventually moved to the iconic curved brick building that it is recognised for today on 4th August, 1937.
