Our Philosophy
The Library is committed to offering high quality educational information services to enrich and facilitate teaching and learning at Upwey High School.

The Library supports the curriculum for students and teachers by providing access to a wide variety of print and electronic information resources that address varying levels of difficulty, points of view and diversity of appeal.

The Library actively promotes lifelong learning through the teaching of research skills.

The Library teaches, encourages and supports students to use information confidently, competently and responsibly as part of everyday life.

The Library provides students with opportunities to develop an enthusiasm for literature and knowledge through the pleasure of recreational reading.

The focus of the Library is to support Upwey High School students by providing and fostering an environment where learning, study and research is valued.


 

The Library & Information Centre serves over 1200 students and 90 staff.

The new facility, which opened in September 2000, boasts a collection of over 30,000 books, 1,900 videos and subscriptions to 17 periodicals. Additionally, it has a 25-PC computer lab available to students, with scanners and CD burners provided for archiving.

Opening Hours
 
The School Library is open weekdays from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The Library is open at recess and at lunchtime.
At lunchtime the library is open to students wishing to use the library facility for private study and quiet reading.

From time to time the library is used for VCE exams, teacher training, meetings, guest speaker presentations and other purposes. At these times the library will be closed to students. A notice will be posted on the library door in such cases.

Students require a library pass from their teacher when visiting the library during class time and must show this pass to library staff upon entering the library. All students must sign in and out of the library.

Students are expected to abide by library rules, and use the Internet and all library resources appropriately.

Students will be expected to pay for lost or damaged library resources.

No food or drink is allowed in the library.

Borrowing FAQs

How many books may I borrow?

Students in years 7-10 may borrow up to 5 books at a time.

Students in years 11 and 12 may borrow 10 books at a time.

The borrowing period for all students is 2 weeks.

May I extend the borrowing period?

If you wish to renew the books you have on loan for another 2 week period, you may do so, as long as the book has not been requested by another student or teacher.

What material may I borrow?

Books:

You may borrow both fiction and non-fiction books from the lending part of the library collection. Books from the Reference Collection may not be borrowed. These resources must be available to all students at all times. The Reference Collection comprises of books such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries, atlases and specialist books on particular subjects. You may use these books in the library.

Videos:

Students may borrow from the library's Video Collection.

You may borrow one video at a time overnight.

The library's video collection comprises of educational videos that relate to your schoolwork. The library does not have feature films video available for students to loan.

Periodicals:


Periodicals are only available for use in the library are cannot be borrowed.

What is my responsibility once I have borrowed a library item?

Your responsibility as a library borrower is to look after the book or library material you have borrowed. It is expected that you return library items in the same condition as you borrowed them. Please ensure that you return the library item by the due date.

Can I allow another student to borrow library items in my name?

The answer to this is NO, NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, is it advisable to let any one else, no matter how well you know the person, to borrow a book under your name.

If you allow a friend to borrow a book in your name, and they lose the book, you will still be responsible for the return of the item, or for the payment of the item should it become lost or damaged.
What happens if I have an overdue book?

If you have an overdue book from the library you will not be able to borrow again until the book has been returned. This includes the borrowing of novels required for class reading.

The Library takes the following steps when a student fails to return library items:

1. Overdue notices are sent home on a regular basis throughout the term.

2. Students who are persistently irresponsible library borrowers will be reminded of overdue items at home-group assemblies.

3. The student will be notified that they have overdue items at parent/teacher interviews. An
overdue notice will be filed with the students report.

4. If overdue library books or materials are still outstanding by the end of the year, the student will not be able to collect his or her end of year report until the overdue items are returned or paid for.
 

Lost Library Materials

If you have lost any of the items you borrowed from the library, you will be responsible for the cost of these items.

Payment for lost books can be made at the library or at the main office.

Reserving Library Materials

In cases where the item you wish to borrow is on loan, you may reserve it so that it will be held for you at the library.

Please ask the library staff if you wish to reserve a book. Items will be held for one week.

  Acceptable Use of the Library

• Food and drink are not for consumption in the library. Bottled water may be drunk only at the bag racks. Food includes chewing gum and lollies.

• No Bags are allowed in the library. Pigeon Holes are provides in the library foyer to store bags.

• Students require a Library Pass from their teacher giving permission to study in the library during class time.

• Library Passes must be shown to library staff upon entering the library.

• Students must sign ‘in’ upon arrival and ‘out’ when leaving the library.

• Students are not to rearrange library furniture unless permission to do so has been given by library staff or teachers.

• In cases where students genuinely need to work together, the tables at the front of the library seat 2 students and are available for quiet discussion. Students who abuse this privilege will be asked to move to separate tables. The Library Discussion Room and the Library Classroom maybe available for group discussion. Please ask the library staff.

• Please observe school rules for computer usage, these are displayed on the walls near the library computers.

• Please observe school rules for the appropriate use of the Internet.

• Disruptive and destructive behaviour will not be tolerated.

• Work quietly and keep talking to a minimum.

• Do not congregate around the library shelves. Students only need to go to the library shelves to locate books and move back to a table.

• Place all rubbish in bins provided, this includes pencil shavings.

• The purpose of the library is to provide a place for quiet study, research and recreational reading.

Students that that are not behaving in an appropriate manner will be asked to leave the library. Names will be recorded and forwarded to year level co-ordinators.

 
Acceptable Use of Library Computers

The Library is primarily an information provider supporting the curriculum in the school. The use of the library computers therefore must be work directed and associated with formal schoolwork.

Please read the Acceptable use Policies for Internet and Network. Failure to abide by these rules will result in not being able to use the computers.

1. Do not change the background wallpapers of the screens – you will be asked to leave your computer if you do so. Repeat offenders will be banned from using computers in the library.

2. Do not enter chat rooms – you will be asked to leave your computer if you are found in a chat session. Repeat offenders will have internet access disabled and be banned from using computers in the library.

3. Do not attempt to play games - you will be asked to leave your computer if you are found in playing a game. Repeat offenders will be banned from using computers in the library.
