Careers Planning

UPWEY HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS

A key component to student development, career planning, takes shape through many programs and activities at school. At Year 9, students are introduced to The Real Game with a Career Education focus. They are encouraged to explore career self-awareness and to develop knowledge to access relevant career information.

Occupational Health and Safety is introduced as a lead up to our Work Experience program in Year 10.  Relevant OH&S modules are completed in preparation for this program.

Our Year 10 students participate in many career activities, and a structured vocational assessment at the conclusion of work experience establishes a basis on which we base the VCE/VCAL course selection process which takes place in Term 3. "The Job Guide" is also distributed to all Year 10 students at this time. This is a substantial book that contains information on a variety of career themes including job information, job contacts, and job preparation.

All of our Year 10 students have the opportunity of a planned, tightly structured interview where the goals and accomplishments of our students are documented and put into a structured career plan. This MIPS plan is also continued into Year 11 and Year 12.

Course counselling is an essential part of Term 3 for all of our students in Years 10-12. Our Year 12 students are given particular guidance during their VTAC course selection period during Term 3 and again after results are received in December.

For our Year 12 students, Change of Preference week during the last week of school in December is one of the most important weeks of their school career. The Careers Centre is available during this time for all students to access up-to-date information and advice.

Our regional Careers Night takes place every year at Eastland Shopping Centre during Term 3. This is a very helpful and important event on the careers calendar. Websites that may assist with career planning could include http://jobguide.dest.gov.au and www.futurefinder.com.au.

Open Days at Universities, TAFEs and Private Colleges are mostly in August, usually on a Sunday and they afford students the opportunity to visit a university or TAFE campus to sample the atmosphere and gather information about courses and careers. The Open Day dates and times are put up in the VCE centre, or students can check individual institution websites.
